Everything there is to do around Foix

Cathar castles, an underground river, painted caves, 2,000-metre summits, thermal baths and ski resorts: the Ariège fits inside an hour’s drive. Here is what we genuinely recommend.

Things to do

You are staying in the right place

Foix sits at the foot of the Pyrenees, an hour from Toulouse and an hour and a half from Andorra. Leaving the property in the morning you can boat down an underground river, walk to a mountain lake or visit a 14,000-year-old painted cave — and be back for dinner.

Foix and its heritage

Château de Foix

On foot

Three towers that have watched over the town since the 11th century. You can see them from the window; it would be a shame not to climb up.

Old Foix

On foot

Medieval lanes, the covered grain hall, terraces on place Saint-Volusien. An hour’s wander, on foot from the property.

Les Forges de Pyrène

10 min

A full-scale village of old trades, with blacksmiths and a glassblower at work. The best plan in the valley with children.

Mirepoix

35 min

A 13th-century bastide with one of the finest arcaded squares in France. Go on a Monday, market day.

Château de Montségur

50 min

The last Cathar stronghold, perched at 1,200 m. Twenty minutes of steep climbing, and a view that explains everything.

Underground and prehistory

Labouiche underground river

10 min

Europe’s longest navigable underground river: an hour by flat-bottomed boat beneath the rock, six kilometres from the property.

Parc de la Préhistoire

20 min

At Tarascon-sur-Ariège: flint-knapping workshops, spear-thrower practice, a facsimile of Niaux’s Salon Noir. A full half-day.

Lombrives cave

25 min

One of Europe’s largest cavities, visited by little train then on foot. Bring a jacket: it is 13 °C all year.

Niaux cave

30 min

Bison painted 14,000 years ago, lit by torchlight, in the original cave. Booking essential, well in advance.

Mas-d’Azil cave

40 min

The only cave in France you drive through, and a major prehistoric site. Spectacular from the entrance onwards.

Mountains and hiking

Prat d’Albis

25 min

The balcony above Foix at 1,200 m: high pasture, free-roaming horses, the whole range in view. Paragliders take off on the right wind.

Mont Fourcat

30 min

A 2,000-metre summit reachable in half a day from the col de Marrous, with a 360° view over the Ariège Pyrenees.

Pic de Saint-Barthélemy

45 min

The big local hike: 2,348 m, the Étangs du Diable on the way, Montségur below. A proper full day of walking.

Étang de Lers

50 min

A high lake set in a cirque, on the road to the port de Lers. Picnics, bracing swims and legendary Tour de France passes.

Cascade d’Ars

1 h 10

Three drops over 250 m, at the end of a forest climb from Aulus-les-Bains. Its protected-site status is deserved.

Water and adrenaline

Rafting and canoeing on the Ariège

10 min

Guided descents starting from Foix, from the family run to sporting rafting depending on the spring flow.

Treetop courses and via ferrata

20 min

Rope courses in the trees for the youngest, an equipped via ferrata for everyone else, minutes from the valley.

Canyoning

45 min

Jumps, natural slides and abseils in the Couserans canyons. Several levels, from age 8 on the discovery routes.

Lac de Montbel

40 min

Six hundred hectares of water forty minutes away: supervised swimming in summer, sailing, paddleboarding and a cycle loop around it.

Thermal baths

Ussat-les-Bains

20 min

The warm waters of the Ariège valley, twenty minutes away, among cliffs and caves.

Bains du Couloubret, Ax-les-Thermes

40 min

Outdoor pools at 38 °C at the foot of the slopes, hammam and hot tubs. Perfect after a day’s skiing or hiking.

Aulus-les-Bains thermal baths

1 h 05

A mountain spa town that has stayed under the radar, in a village at the end of the valley. Absolute quiet.

Winter

Monts d’Olmes

40 min

The closest resort, forty minutes door to door: the ski day you decide on that same morning.

Ax 3 Domaines

45 min

Eighty kilometres of pistes up to 2,400 m, with the thermal baths below to finish the day.

Plateau de Beille

50 min

The largest cross-country area in the Pyrenees: nordic skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and sledging for children.

1 h

Skiing among fir forest, facing Mont Valier. An hour’s drive, and a village-resort feel.

Day trips

45 min

A UNESCO-listed episcopal city, Romanesque cloister and a view of the Pyrenees. Combine it with the Saint-Girons market.

Toulouse

1 h

An hour on the motorway to the Pink City: the Capitole, Cité de l’Espace, the banks of the Garonne.

Carcassonne

1 h 15

France’s most visited medieval city, an hour and a quarter away. Leave early — it takes the whole day.

Andorra

1 h 30

The principality an hour and a half away via the Puymorens tunnel: high passes, duty-free shopping and skiing into April.
